Week of 9/22 publix and bilo.

I cannot forget my blog followers… I’m sorry for neglecting you all. The Facebook page is a little more convenient, but everything there is just straight forward. This is where you get to know us and how we operate.

So this week’s grocery shopping trip was not at our usual time. We hit the afternoon rush on Saturday. That was not as fun as first thing in the morning when you feel like you own the store. At publix we picked up three boxes of fruit loops in which Isaac was excited about. We got them for a 1.99 each and got a coupon for $1/3. Then we picked up the old El Paso taco kits for 3.19 total. Had two .50 coupons that doubled so we picked those up for 1.29. The best deal at publix was two Duncan Hines cake mixes for 1.79. Had two .35 which makes it .70 cents off each. So we picked up both for .49 cents. Then we got the birds eye chef’s favorites. Side note: these usually go 50% off. So I try to pick them up then. They were 3 for $5 and had three coupons for $1 off. So I got all three for 2.00.

At bilo we got koolaid hammers 2 for $4. Then we used the ibotta app to earn .75 cents. Picked up BOGO London broils and hamburger meat for 1.99 a pound. Then got six southern home veggies for .58 cents each. For my wonderful wife we got her a week of frozen dinners for $4. Then picked up five sodas for $2.25 and then received .10 cents in fuel perks.

Alright so before coupons: 134.81. After coupons: 65.78. Savings of 48.7%.

Tune in next week.

Updates

Hello everyone!

To let everyone know Isaac and I still have not met the $40 challenge. However for the month of July we have had a lot of events.

First off Chrystal graduated with her Masters degree in Education emphasis in History. Then we had different things going on with family events and all.

I have been utilizing the Facebook page more, http://www.facebook.com/daddyandisaacgoshopping. So those who haven’t started following us go right ahead. I’m usually posting all sorts of coupons and status updates through out the day. With the timing feature on there, I have been able to schedule updates so it has been nice. Plus a lot of pictures are on there of Isaac, myself, and people who venture out with us.

We have also started venturing over to Aldi. Overall not a bad place to shop especially for fruit and veggies. We got $20 worth of veggies and it has lasted us almost two weeks. The rest of the stuff the jury is still out on.

For those who are looking for back-to-school updates and supplies we have it up and going. So follow us for all of the happenings.

We have made it to Pinterest as well. The screen name is dadisaacgoshop. This is where we take our shopping a step further. We take what is on sale and plan meals around them. Plus we have added frugal money saving products that are not an arm and a leg.

Hope everyone is doing well. Give us a shout out sometime.

Weekend of Jan 26 Publix and Bi-Lo

So after the massive week before last, I really didn’t need to get a lot.  Chrystal told me I couldn’t go hog-wild like that.  By the way, we only have 8lbs of turkey bacon left.

So we made our way to Publix and none of our usual workers were there.  It was like missing family.  We stopped off for our cookie and then started on our mission.  Now this time we had a lot of veggies on the list.  I have had a few questions stating, “David, how can I get veggies dirt cheap?”  Well the main way is to get them that are in season.  For example getting a watermelon right now is just for unseasoned and people who don’t care about saving money.  You see them at the register, “how can this cost so much?!”  It’s because you get everything out of season.  Alright off my rant now.  We picked up some florida squash and zucchini.  Then we got some clementines and a bag of apples.  Every once in a while publix will do a coupon for fruits and veggies.  Just remember to cut your costs, stick to the fruit in season.  Publix also had 50% off Kellog’s cereal and we had a coupon.  So we picked up frosted flakes, froot loops, and corn pops.  Isaac got excited because we got the cereal with the tiger on the box.  We also picked up some mustard as well.  It was BOGO at $1.67 and we had two .30 cent coupons.  We got two of them for .47 cents.  Mustard keeps for forever.  So having a couple of them around will always be able to be used.  Then we got the Betty Crocker snacks for $1.95 each.  Picked up four of them.  Isaac got two Dora ones and two shark ones.  Another highlight is the whole fruit bars, the coconut ones.  They were BOGO at $3.59 and had a .35/1 and had two of those coupons.  So that made them $2.19 for both.  If you haven’t had these you are definitely missing out.  So at Publix before coupons it was $77.19.  After coupons:  $39.64.  Sweet!

Over to Bi-Lo.  My favorite pickup was the tomato and chicken noodle soup.  I got four of them for $1.20.  Then we picked up six cases of the kool-aid jammers for $1.88 each.  These are lasting until 3-31-12 with the price lock.  YAAAYYYY!  We also picked up two coffeemate coffee creamers for .90 cents each.  YAAAYYYY!!!!  Chrystal was very happy about that one.  Bi-Lo has started something new.  They have started offering veggies pick 4 for $9.99.  We got two fresh express bags of lettuce, carrots and blackberries.  I am beginning to like this.  So the total before coupons:  $37.22.  After coupons was only $25.01.

So my grand total before coupons:  $114.41.  After coupons:  $64.65.  A savings of roughly 77%.

Operation Cheap Bird

Alright so challenge number one was accepted. My mom is the one that took over the thanksgiving cooking after my nanny passed away in 1999. Those were some very happy memories and when the holidays roll around there are tons of them that involve her and her cooking. The best one is the year that she, momma, and I wallpapered her entire dining room. After we finished we went shopping and bought everything that was needed to cook up thanksgiving dinner. So we stayed up pretty much all night to get that dinner taken care of.

My mom puts in a ton of time and energy into this meal each year and thank you is just not enough to say compared to everything that she does. It has been a literal late night tradition for many years. So this year with guests in the weekend she usually does her shopping, Isaac and I decided to take on her shopping. I told him last week, “Nana needs our help shopping.” He said, “We can go get her a Barbie doll.” So after 3:30pm Saturday we set out for what would be the epic challenge of them all. OPERATION CHEAP BIRD! This week I have been collecting coupons and getting momma’s massive list sorted out between the stores to make sure total savings can be accomplished.

Friday: I sat down at the computer to gather myself before taking on the epic shopping trip. Just realizing how truly blessed I am. Not in a “look at me” way, but in a God has blessed us so much way. It is very overwhelming. So getting to help my mom out is just another way I can give back.

Saturday: We started it out the same way we normally do. We got up early and went shopping for our weekly trip. (See Previous post). After I got Isaac down for a nap I did some last minute switching and coupon finding. Here is the list we received:

Apple Pie
Sister Schubert Rolls
Sweet Potatoes
Potatoes (20 lbs bag, prefer yukon golds or similar type)
Saltine Crackers
Carrots (I have a lot of carrots at home)
Dixie Sugar
Brown Sugar
Confectionary Sugar

Chicken broth

Milk

celery
Butter, organic

Eggs, dozen

Cranberry sauce whole berry (store brand is fine)

fresh cranberries (if on sale)
turkey (on sale for dressing and gravy)
turkey bacon
evaporated milk
sweetened condensed milk
Oven turkey bags 1 box
pumpkin pie filling mix
karo light syrup
frozen chopped spinach
jiffy yellow corn muffin mix

This was split between Publix, Bi-Lo, and Fresh Market. So we picked the ones off of East Brainerd Road and decided to work our way up next to Bi-Lo and then to Fresh Market.

Publix was the first stop. We picked up the amazing sister Schubert rolls they were 2/$6 and picked up eight of them. Now our family can go through a TON of those. If those things had turkey in them we wouldn’t need the rest of the dinner. I had a coupon for .50/1. Then we finally found the turkey bacon. It was the Oscar Meyer ones 3/$8. Isaac was getting hungry after running back and forth through that publix so he started chewing on it. Yummy! (Pictures will follow at the end of the post.) We loaded in 20lbs of potatoes into the cart and Isaac wasn’t sure about what to make of it. He looked at them and said, “daddy what is nana going to do with those potatoes?” I said, “She is going to make potato salad and mashed potatoes for thanksgiving.” He said, “No French fries?” I think he maybe a little heartbroken, but will get over it. We also scored some Cool Whip at BOGO prices and had a $1/2 coupon thanks to momma. We also got four cans of del monte green beans for .47 each. The jiffy corn muffins were on sale for 47 cents as well. We also decided to pick up the chocolate pudding packets. Isaac got so excited. “Nana is going to make pooding (as he calls pudding). It was 3 for $4 and we had a $1/3 coupon and so that made them $1 each. Now half this stuff I had no idea what it was and the east brainerd one was setup different from our normal Ooltewah publix. It also didn’t help that there were TONS of people in there and we had the racing car shopping cart. So squeezing down aisles were not a luxury. At one point Isaac was saying, “BEEP BEEP! Me and daddy are coming through!” Some people thought it was cute, but some did not. After over 2 hours in there we finally made it to the register for checkout. So before coupons $116.27 afterwards $80.39.

Bi-Lo: The sun was already about to set. I really didn’t intend to stay that long in Publix, but with not knowing where everything was we had a setback. BI-LO was the samething. Now they didn’t have the big racing shopping cart so we had to get a regular one. So a three year old who just finished his THIRD cookie of the day and a regular shopping cart. We got 5 pounds of sweet potatoes. They were .49 lb. Now this is where the bulk of the shopping was done. We went down the canned food aisle looking for English peas. Not really sure what they were. So I asked Isaac to look for them and he couldn’t find them. So he saw this lady coming down the aisle and said, “hey! My daddy is looking for some peas. What do they look like?” So after laughing she told me the difference. Apparently she was a fellow couponer as well and followed us around because Isaac was doing stuff and making her laugh. We got six things of chicken broth. .55/1 and IT DOUBLES! So I got them for .30 each. This is where we got the first turkey. I picked Isaac up so he could see the frozen turkeys and I picked one up and handed it to him. (Pictures below). The Philadelphia cream cheese was .99. Then we had a .55/2 coupon. So that made it .71 each. Then we picked up two pies and more whipped topping $8.99. So after almost three hours Isaac was tired and hungry. Finally he just sat in the cart with his head on my chest and said, “daddy I’m hungry!” So we FINALLY finished up the shopping. It took us about 30 minutes to check out with almost 100 items. So before coupons: $205.50. After coupons: $131.12.

Intermission: Isaac had been such a trooper. At this point we were at close to five hours and he was just so tired. Then we went to Taco Bell. Those XXL nachos are definitely worth it! Isaac devoured two cheese roll ups and cinnamon twists.

So to Fresh Market: Isaac was upset there were no free cookies or lobsters. However he loved looking at all the Christmas stuff in there. We picked up the other 14lb turkey. Then the infamous strawberry rhubarb pie was next on the list. Now if you have never had one, go get one! Down south we have a ton of sweet pies, but none with a bite to it. This one is a new favorite and Chrystal is very happy that we found it here. Then we also picked up a bag of Sage. Let’s just say don’t get caught in a drug search with a bag of sage on you. It looks too much like the real thing. Isaac also thought it was funny to sit on the turkey. He also tried to take a bite out of it as well. There were no coupons used here so the price was $49.06.

There was a budgeted total of $328.61. That’s the amount that it should have been and usually is for Momma. Before coupons we blew that amount out of the water: $370.83. After coupons: $260.57. A complete savings of: $110.26.

I would say it was an epic success! Hats off to Isaac since he was with me practically from 8am until he went to bed that evening and he got really tired of me.

Happy Thanksgiving to all! And much love!
